J. ROY CONSTRUCTION

I was born in Norwalk, Connecticut and have lived in Palo Alto, Houston, Los Altos, Cupertino, Aptos and Berkeley. I currently reside in Davis CA with my wife and three sons. I attended UC Davis and graduated in 1981 with a degree in Plant Science (Agriculture).

 

After a short career with the USDA, I began working in residential construction in the San Francisco Bay Area. I began as a construction laborer and progressed through the ranks as apprentice carpenter, journeyman carpenter, jobsite foreman, and project superintendent. I was fortunate to be trained in the carpentry trade by very skilled, experienced and colorful characters. I was also privileged to work on many very complex, high end homes and multifamily projects in San Francisco, Marin County and the East Bay area.

 

When I learned residential construction, it was essential to be accomplished in foundation, framing and finish carpentry, as well as having a thorough understanding of the plumbing, electrical, and heating and air conditioning trades.

 

After settling back in Davis, I began my own business, J. Roy Construction, in 1996. I began by developing infill vacant lots into single family homes and expanded into remodel projects in 2008. In 2002, I began designing my own work. I use Autodesk Revit, a Building Informational Modeling system. It is wonderful to have such a powerful tool available to create extraordinary projects. I believe a great plan developed fully before construction begins is essential to creating great work. I enjoy dividing my time between design and construction.
